Recent Escapades and Brushes with Fame Jan 2004
The past few weeks have been big thumbs up for the band. We have
begun our residency at the Bowery Poetry Club and our Jan 2nd show included
rousing poetry from the band along with Dirty Puppet and a surprise reading
from Taylor Mead. We made an appearance at the Polar Bear event on New Year's
Day at Coney Island, which was one of the best New Year's Day's that any of
us can remember. We had 4 sacrificial lambs to offer the Atlantic Ocean from
our ranks that included Albert, Ruth, Robin and Ethan. On New Year's Eve we
performed a surprise parade for the folks of Brooklyn beginning at 9pm at Mug's
Ale House and proceeding through the streets, we were joined by our Pleasure
Society and several bear. Yes, bears! We then went over to ring in the New Year
with 3 countdowns and Auld Lang Syn at the Lost City Party. We stayed up all
night and then had a group breakfast burrito buffet at Tara's house in the early
AM hours to fortify ourselves with the chef duties falling on our trombonist
Mr. Myers, before heading out to join the Polar Bears on the Beach.
For the fifth year or sixth year in a row we played for the New York Marathon
Runners on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg Brooklyn. This year, we were quite
unexpectedly approached by a member of the NYPD, who tried to prevent us from
playing! Lucky for us, a champion lawyer for the ACLU, who just happened to
be in the crowd as a guest of our friend Phil was there to defend us. Our Civil
Liberties were upheld and we were able to play our hearts out for the runners
and you know how they love us! We play the same song for 3 hours and oh boy
do they love that!

HMB Flag Missing
Our flag was stolen at the Mermaid
Day Parade at Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY in June of 2002. Maybe it was an accident
but it's time to do the right thing and return our flag. Help us catch the thief.
This was original artwork created by one of our members. This flag is very dear
to us and we want our flag back. Any info leading to the return of our flag
will be rewarded handsomely with an HMB CD and a T-shirt. Thank you for your
support. Let us know if you can identify this character... Flag
Thief?
HMB is the champion trophy winner of Coney Islands Mermaid
Parade for 5 years and 1 year we didn't win due to a fluke.
